John T. “Bubby” Maurer, 91 passed away peacefully on June 17, 2016 at the NYS Veterans Home in Montrose. He was born in Elmsford, NY on April 20, 1925 to the late John and Margaret (Hagen) Maurer. John grew up in Tarrytown and graduated from Washington Irving HS. Immediately after graduation, John enlisted in the Merchant Marines. He then served in the US Army under the Army Air Corps Division and proudly served in WWII. In 1949, John married Madeline “Lena” Capalbo of White Plains, NY. Together they raised their children in Tarrytown, NY.
John worked as a newspaper pressman, first for The Daily News on Valley St. in North Tarrytown and later for The Journal News in Harrison, NY. He rarely missed a day of work until his retirement in 1987.
After the passing of his wife Lena in 1993, John moved to Dutchess County. He became an active member of the Fishkill Seniors, enjoying trips to the casinos, bingo and movies. For the last several years, John resided at the NYS Veterans Home in Montrose. He loved music, watching old movies, sitting outdoors in the garden with family and friends, and most of all, John cherished his days laughing, joking and weekly card games with his children and grandchildren.
Predeceased by his loving wife, Madeline “Lena” in 1993, John is survived by his daughter JoAnn (Steven) Weitman of Brewster, his sons John (Margaret) Maurer of Putnam Valley, Kevin (Kari) Maurer of Arden, NC and Kenneth (Christine) Maurer of Wappingers Falls and his 8 grandchildren, Andrew, Sabrina, Patrick, John, Zachary, Maddie Lynn, Kenneth and Christopher. Also surviving is his sister Margaret “Bootsie” Sanzo of Apopka, FL. He was predeceased by his sisters Anita Ascani of White Plains and Elizabeth Kiselak of Poughquag.
Visitation will be on Monday from 4PM to 8PM at Coffey Funeral Home. His Funeral Mass will be on Tuesday at 10:00 at Transfiguration Church with interment to follow in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
