Augustus A. ‘Gus’ Marano, a longtime Tarrytown resident died December 15, 2016 in North Carolina where he had been living since 2012.
Gus was born March 8, 1924 in Ossining as was the son of Joseph and Margaret Scopea Marano.
In 1942, Gus left High School to enlist in the United States Army. He served proudly until his discharge in 1945. He was a Combat Infantryman and served in the Northern France Campaign. He received the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with one Bronze Campaign Star, the Good Conduct Ribbon and a Purple Heart Combat Infantry Badge.
After the war he worked as a Distributor for Metropolitan Tobacco in White Plains and in his retirement he delivered flowers for Alma Snape Flowers in Tarrytown.
He will be remembered for his strong sense of patriotism. He was an active member of the VFW Post 1939, the DAV Chapter 39, American Legion Spencer Kelly Post and the Catholic War Veterans Post 205. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aeries 1042, Knights of Columbus St. Elmo’s Council #319 and Hope Hose of the Tarrytown Fire Department.
Gus is survived by his sons Kevin of Gulf Breeze, FL and Augustus ‘Gus’ Jr. of White Oaks, NC as well as 5 grandchildren and 3 step-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Mary and Grace. He was predeceased by his wife Peggy (Callaway), his sister Margaret and brothers Thomas, Joseph and Victor and his step-grandson Troy.
Memorial Visitation will be at Coffey Funeral Home on Saturday June 17 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM with burial and full military honors to follow in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
