Thomas Edward Smith
March 8, 1936 – September 15, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Thomas Edward Smith, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Tom peacefully passed away on September 15, 2025, at the age of 89. He was a lifelong resident of Tarrytown, NY, and his presence in the community will be deeply missed.
Born on March 8, 1936, in Tarrytown, Tom was the son of the late William A. Smith and the late Edna Kendrick. A proud graduate of North Tarrytown High School, Class of 1954, Tom excelled in athletics, earning letters in four sports: football, basketball, baseball, and track. His natural talent on the field earned him respect, and he carried that discipline and dedication throughout his life.
After high school, Tom served his country with distinction in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958, stationed in both France and Germany. Following his military service, he returned to his hometown, where he began his long and illustrious career with the North Tarrytown Police Department in 1960. He rose through the ranks, ultimately retiring as a Sergeant after many years of dedicated service. He also served as Provincial Lieutenant for one year before his retirement. Tom also worked for the Greenock Corp. from April 1986 to July 2016.
Tom was also a proud member of several organizations, including the Westchester PBA, where he served on the Board of Trustees for 10 years and as President for 4. He was an active member of the Emerald Society of Westchester and the Catholic War Veterans. He was a longtime member of the FOE Aerie #1042, the NT Dads Club (where he served as president), and the Mahopac Sports Association. His leadership and commitment to the community extended to his time with the Tarrytown Wolf Pack and the TNT Dads Club.
Outside of his professional accomplishments, Tom was an avid softball player, beloved by all who knew him in the Tarrytown and North Tarrytown communities. He was a proud member and president of the NTPD Revolver Club for 10 years, where he made lasting friendships and shared his passion for marksmanship.
Tom was a man who greatly loved and treasured his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of many years, Donna Marie Smith, and his four children: Shari Anne Mullen, Thomas R. Smith (Edelys), Jodi L. Turner (Daniel), and Brian P. Smith (Lianna). He was the proud grandfather of seven grandchildren, who were the light of his life.
Tom was also a loving brother to Kevin Smith (Janet) and Willa Wright (Kevin), and he is predeceased by his brother Denis Smith (Barbara) and his many nieces and nephews.
A man of integrity, service, and humor, Tom’s legacy will live on through the many lives he touched. He was a true pillar of his community, always there to lend a hand, share a laugh, or offer a word of advice. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and strength that will never be forgotten.
