Sister Alice (John Marie) Alter (86) died peacefully Thursday, December 26, 2024, at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown NY. Born in Brooklyn, NY, to Louis W. and Catherine McCormack Alter, she had been a member of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary for 64 years.        

She taught at St. Catharine of Alexandria School, Brooklyn, NY; St. Anne’s School, Garden City, NY; Christ the King School, Yonkers, NY; and St. Rose of Lima School, Rockaway Beach, NY.

She was the coordinator of Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY and a member of the staff

Cormaria Retreat House, Sag Harbor, NY.

A member of the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, Sister Alice was a pastoral counselor at Medical Center, Long Beach Hospital, Brooklyn, NY; Calvary Satellite in Lutheran Hospital, Brooklyn, NY; and Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla, NY.

She retired to Marymount Convent in 2009 and was a member of the Convent community at the time of her death.

Sister Alice is preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Sister Mary Alter, RSHM, and brother Francis, niece Betty Anne and nephew Bill, Jr. She is survived by her brother William and her nieces Margaret, Marialice, Eileen, Judy, Diane, Cathy, Mary Lou, Maureen and nephews Thomas, Mark, Michael, Johnny and Peter, and by the members of her religious family.

Services at Marymount Convent, 32 Warren Avenue, Tarrytown, NY. Visiting Sunday, January 5, 4:00 - 7:00 pm with Vigil Service 7:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial, Monday, January 6, 10:30 am. Burial Mount Calvary Cemetery, White Plains.
