Selma Louise Clark passed away on September 13, 2025, at the age of 95.
Born and raised in New York City, Selma attended the city’s public schools, graduating from the Walton High School, an all girl school in the Bronx, in 1948. She then attended Metropolitan Hospital School of Nursing where she earned a Registered Nurse (RN) degree, after which she worked in hospitals and as a public health nurse.
While attending nursing school, Selma met Leonard Clark, then a student at City College of New York. They married in 1952 at Abyssinian Baptist Church in Manhattan, and a daughter, Cheryl, was born of that union.
Selma continued her education and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from St. Johns University. In 1957 the family moved to Hempstead, New York where they resided for over 50 years. Selma worked as a school nurse teacher for several years while attending Hofstra University at night to gain her Masters degree in Special Education in 1968. Subsequently she taught cognitively and physically challenged students in a Nassau Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOSCES) school. She retired in 1995.
While living in Hempstead, Selma participated in many community service and civil rights organizations, including the Hempstead Heights Civic Association and the Hempstead NAACP. She was a longtime member of Business and Professional Women and the Suburban League, both of which raised money to provide college scholarships for local high school students and to support the New Opportunities at Hofstra Program (NOAH), a special admission program at Hofstra. She was also a member of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority and the High Tides Yacht Club.
Selma and Leonard, moved to Kendal on Hudson, a Continuing Care Retirement Community in Sleepy Hollow, New York in 2015. There, Selma was a member of the Horticulture Committee, participated in a book club, and looked after the pets and plants of vacationing residents.
Selma was predeceased by her husband, Leonard, her brother, James Stubbs, Jr, and her sister, Bobbette Stubbs. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Cheryl Clark and her husband Danny Brundage of Arlington, Massachusetts, step-granddaughter Dana Brundage of Taunton, Massachusetts, step-grandson Danny Brundage, Jr. of Jersey City, New Jersey, her nephews Steven Stubbs of Hope Mills, North Carolina and Neal Stubbs of Tucson, Arizona, her niece Donna Givens of Ellicott City, Maryland, her nephew Howard Lewis, Jr. of Arlington, Virginia, her niece Dr. Simone Hruda of Tallahassee, Florida, and her sister-in-law Marilyn Lewis of Jamaica, New York .
A private service will be held on September 23, 2025. A Celebration of Life will be held at Kendal on Hudson at a later date.
