Sandra L. (Althouse) Lamb Obituary

                                          Sandra L. Althouse Lamb

                                          4/21/1945 to 11/192024

Sandra Althouse Lamb, 79, formerly of NYC, passed away on November 19, 2024.

Born in Illinois, she was the daughter of Samuel and Louise (Givens) Althouse.  Sandra graduated from Swarthmore High School, Swarthmore PA, then went on to graduate from Duke University in Durham, NC at the top of her class, achieving Phi Beta Kappa honors upon graduation.  Sandra went on to earn her Masters degree in Business from NYU and her Doctorate from Columbia.

Sandra worked at Mutual of New York (MONY) in New York City (NYC) where she met the man to become her husband, Lowell Haven Lamb.  With many common interests and activities, they fell in love and were soon married in Sandra’s hometown of Newtown, PA (Bucks County).  They shared 46 years together prior to Lowell’s death in 2023.

Sandra was a devoted member of the 5th Avenue Presbyterian Church in NYC.  Over the years, she served on several church boards and committees.  Quick to volunteer her time and abilities, Sandra also served on a number of nonprofit boards, such as Pittsburgh Theologian Seminary, Vera Institute of Justice, Taproot Foundation and many others.

Sandra developed a fondness for the coast of Maine after waitressing for two summers during college.  The locale became a “more frequent” getaway to find rest and relaxation.  She and Lowell loved to travel, finding new adventures and experiences worldwide in visits to Austria, Great Britian, Greece, Russia, Italy, Africa, Peru, Australia, China and Thailand.  No destination was too remote as they also traveled to the Easter Islands and Antarctica.  Perhaps their favorite trip was trekking in the Swiss and Italian Alps, which they did annually for many years.

For most of her adult life, Sandra lived in NYC.  She and Lowell set up base camp in a wonderful condominium on Park Avenue, within a short walking distance of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Central Park.  This was home for more than 40 years.  They also had a “country house” (which Sandra found and surprised her husband with) in Dutchess County NY – an updated, antique schoolhouse.  She spent many relaxing weekends and holidays there, while Lowell bird-watched and battled the critters attempting to snack on his many, many bird feeders.

After MONY, Sandra worked at Lazard for 19 years.  When she retired from Lazard, she started Lamb Advisors, providing financial services to nonprofit corporations.  Sandra found directing her own business to be both satisfying and rewarding.

Sandra leaves behind cousins Richard Goman (Jean), Mary Ellen Slocum, Bill Dillman (Linda) and David Dillman; nephew Joe Althouse (Mykila), niece Sara Schlehofer, sister-in-law Patricia (Lamb) Henderson (William), niece Susan Henderson-Daniels (Dennis), nephew Brad Henderson (Andelena), and several great nieces and nephews.

Sandra was preceded in death by her parents Sam and Louise, her brother John and her husband Lowell.

Per Sandra’s wishes, no traditional service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sandra’s favorite charity,

Vera Institute of Justice, 34 35th Street Sute 4-2A, Brooklyn, NY  11232. donate@vera.org
