Sandra Kwittken Obituary

Sandra Kwittken was born Sandra Ilene Sterman on 15 February 1936, daughter of a furrier and executive assistant. Her family ultimately moved to Brooklyn NY as immigrants where Sandra became a naturalized citizen in 1953. Ben, her father, and Helen, her mother were of Ukrainian, Polish, Austrian, and Russian Ashkenazi Jewish decent.

Mom was raised in Brooklyn the first 17 years of her life (6 months in Toronto, Canada) where she graduated from Midwood High School, and became an RN through classes she attended at Hunter College. She met her husband, Herbert Kwittken MD a couple years later while Herbert was training as an Orthopedic resident at Albert Einstein Medical College in the city of NY. They later would move to Westchester County and ultimately made a home in North Tarrytown (Sleepy Hollow Manor) NY. Sandra gave birth to Theodore, Andrew, and Leslie in 1960, 1961, and 1964 respectively. Mom went back to earn her Bachelor of Arts degree inn Psychology at Iona College, and her Masters in Social Work at NYU to be a licensed Therapist by the State of NY with an LCSW. Sandra Kwittken RN, MSW, LCSW was hired soon afterwards as Director of Nursing for 20 years at Saint Christophers School in Dobbs Ferry NY, after raising her three children and having a career prior as charge nurse in operating room, and psych hospital assignments.

Her father Ben Sterman OBM passed in 1980, and her mother Helen Sterman OBM shortly thereafter built an addition on her residence in Sleepy Hollow manor where they resided until 2004 when Helen passed. Sandra ultimately moved to The Quay in Tarrytown in 2005 until her death last Saturday evening on the 3rd of July after sunset. In 2007, her eldest son Theodore OBM predeceased her on April 30th having suffered a brain aneurysm .

She is survived by her son Andrew who resides in San Diego County, and his sons Benjamin Kwittken MD, and Daniel Kwittken of Ventura County, and San Diego County respectively.

She is also survived by Leslie Lybrand, her daughter , and Donald Lybrand her son in law, with their 2 children Hannah and Nathanial of Richland County South Carolina.

Her funeral service is being held at Sharon Gardens Jewish Cemetery in Valhalla NY on 5 July 2021.
