Robert John Smith “Smitty”, 76, of Tarrytown passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2023. Smitty was born in Tarrytown, NY on December 17, 1946 to Russell Smith and Mary (Gilroy) Smith.  He attended and graduated Transfiguration School in 1960. Smitty also attended Sleepy Hollow High School, graduating in 1964. 
Following his father’s footsteps, Smitty was an active member of Hope Hose Fire Department up until his passing. Smitty joined Hope Hose in 1964, serving as fire chief in 1980.  He served on the Board of Fire Wardens for several years, along with serving as the driver of Engine 79. Some of Smitty’s favorite times were had in Lake George at the annual fire conventions. He was proud of the brotherhood that came with being a member of Hope Hose.
Aside from being an active Hope Hose member, Smitty’s favorite title was Dad. He welcomed his son, Christopher T. Smith in January of 1985 and his daughter, Ashley F. Smith in June of 1987.  He enjoyed his time in New Hampshire with his family, spending summers in Maine. He especially enjoyed taking his children to the Sandwich Fair every fall.
Smitty was the life of the party and found every opportunity to play a practical joke. He was a well-read man who loved history and a good tale.  His love for life and people will be something that will be missed beyond measure.
Smitty is predeceased by his parents, Russell and Mary Smith as well as many aunts and uncles. He is survived by his children Christopher and Ashley Smith. He leaves behind several cousins who all share wonderful memories of Smitty.
Visitation will be Friday, December 1, 2023 at Coffey Funeral home 91 N. Broadway, Tarrytown from 4-6 P.M.  Immediately following will be a vigil service followed by Department Services. His loved ones then invite you to a farewell party at Hope Hose, 50 Main Street, Tarrytown, starting at 7 P.M.
