Richard E. Rose, “Rick”, beloved husband of Joan Desharnais Rose, married 61 years, passed away on December 18, 2024 in Richmond, Virginia. He was born in Fillmore, NY in 1940, descended from Polish-American immigrants, and spent the majority of his life in the Tarrytown Villages of New York. He was a devoted father to Christopher, Stephanie and Alison, and grandfather to Abigail, Delaney, Avery, Cassidy, and Lily. He graduated from the University of Buffalo with both a Bachelor's and a Master's Degree in History, and from the University of Maryland with his Professional Degree. Family, community, history and music were his passions and guiding principles. As a life-long learner, he read voraciously, and curated an extraordinary book collection. He began his teaching career at Westlake High School in Thornwood, NY. During his extensive tenure in the classroom, Rick touched thousands of lives. He lit up every room he entered, with his endless enthusiasm and magical ability to connect with students, colleagues, and friends alike. He continued teaching long after retirement from Westlake, working at the Westchester Hebrew High School in Mamaroneck as well as Fordham University, Marymount College, Manhattanville College, and Westchester Community College. In addition, Rick served his community with tireless energy, and boundless determination to improve the lives of those in need, as well as to preserve the historic artifacts, homes, and anecdotes from the Tarrytown area. His favorite philanthropic endeavors included The Tarrytown Rotary Club, and The Historical Society in Tarrytown, where he served as President many times. Rick also served as the Village Historian of the Tarrytowns. A service will be held on January 4th at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Transfiguration, 268 S. Broadway in Tarrytown, NY. Rick's faith was a constant priority throughout his life. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Rick’s memory can be made to “The Historical Society” at www.thehistoricalsociety.net.
