Rev. F. Dominic Menna Obituary
Father F. Dominic Menna passed away peacefully on April 3, 2025 at the ripe age of 97, living life independently and to the fullest until a short time before his death. Fr. Menna was born in Tarrytown, NY in 1928 just one week after his parents, Florindo and Anna [Paglieto] Menna, came to this country from Abbruzzi, Italy, which is located east of Rome on the Adriatic Sea. He had one sister, Angela [Menna] Adams, of Sleepy Hollow, NY who predeceased him.
Fr. Menna graduated from Washington Irving High School in Tarrytown, NY in 1948 and Stonehill College in Easton, MA in 1953. At Stonehill he studied Philosophy and History and also played college basketball. Father claimed that Rocky Marciano, the late heavyweight boxing champion from Brockton, MA, influenced his decision to study for the priesthood in Boston. He said that while in college he had a friend whose mother knew Marciano’s grandmother who often complained about the lack of Italian priests in Brockton. That was enough to convince Father to enter the seminary in Boston and not New York.
Fr. Menna was ordained a priest by the late Richard Cardinal Cushing on Feb 3, 1958. He spent 10 years at St. Mary’s Parish in Quincy, MA, then 17 years at St. Florence in Wakefield, MA before being named pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Parish, Revere, MA in 1985 where he remained for 16 years. Fr. Menna was an avid lover of sports and a lifelong Yankees fan which often got him in trouble with his Boston area parishioners who loved to tease him about it. In 2001 he was granted senior priest status and returned to his first parish, St. Mary’s, where he lived in residence but still continued to perform priestly duties. In 2010, Fr. Menna decided to return to Sleepy Hollow, NY where he lived in an apartment in the home his parents once owned until his death. Many remember Fr. Menna for his wonderful sense of humor and uncanny wit, but he is most remembered for the love, compassion, wisdom, and enduring faith that he shared with all. He is survived by a nephew and many cousins scattered throughout the country.
Fr. Menna’s wake will be held at St. Teresa of Avila Church, 130 Beekman Avenue, Sleepy Hollow, NY 10591, from 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM on Palm Sunday, April 13, 2025. A funeral Mass will be held at that same church on Monday, April 14, 2025 at 10 AM. Flowers may be sent to Coffey Funeral Home, 91 North Broadway, Tarrytown, NY 10591 (https://www.coffeyfuneralhome.com/). Also, in lieu of flowers, please feel free to donate in Fr. Menna’s memory to Stonehill College (https://www.stonehill.edu/giving/in-memoriam-gifts/).
