Nigel Selwyn Cassar Obituary

Sleepy Hollow -

Nigel Selwyn Cassar, 77, died on October 18, 2024 at Phelps Hospital after battling cancer for three years.

A loving and caring husband to Penny, he was a dedicated and adoring father to James and Sarah and a doting grandfather to William, Madeline, Grant and Penelope. Nigel was a courteous and generous friend, people referred to him as a true gentleman.

He was born in Alexandria, Egypt to British Vice-Consul, Joseph and JoAnn Cassar. He had one brother, Christopher.

After the Suez crisis in 1956, the family returned to the UK and eventually settled in Wimbledon.

Nigel worked as a translator for the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office and moved to Brussels when Britain joined the European Economic Community. He later caught the attention of the United Nations in New York. He was offered and accepted a six month contract in1976 which lasted 31 years. In 2007, Nigel retired from the UN. He was Chief of Documentation and Terminology.

He was an active member of his local community. He coached AYSO soccer for years and was President of the local beach club and Commodore of the marina.  Nigel loved sailing. It was his passion. From little dinghies to big yachts, he adored being on the water. He qualified as a captain and as an instructor. When not "messing about in boats," you would find him working in the backyard. He sang baritone in his church choir and the Hudson Chorale. He was always ready to assist. From assembling docks in the marina, grounds clean-up at church, setting up risers and chairs for concerts to tirelessly working for a fundraiser tag sale, he was your man.

We will miss him so.

Donations in his memory can be made to Phelps Hospital Cancer Institute or the Nursing Promise Education Fund
