Michael Joseph Murphy, November 7, 1944 - April 25, 2022 was born in Manhattan, New York to Michael and Margaret (nee Griffin). Educated in NYC, Michael went on to graduate from the New York Institute of Technology.
Michael joined the New York Police Department in 1967. He was very devoted to his job and also enjoyed playing the bagpipes in the NYPD Emerald Society. Mike ended his 20 year career in the Manhattan North Homicide Squad as Detective Sergeant.
Michael was very proud of his first generation Irish heritage as was keenly demonstrated in his quick, humorous, Irish wit and generous, thoughtful kindness. Mike, an avid fan of crossword puzzles and Jeopardy, also enjoyed “tinkering” in his homemade workshop building furniture and creating stained glass lampshades and windows.
Surviving Michael are his loving wife Laura (Quinn) of 38 years; his children Michael Brian, Kathleen Marie, Timothy Patrick; and cousins Kate Brady (Hugh), Debbie Coleman (Kevin), Monsignor William Foley, as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Michael was predeceased by his sister, Kathleen Morrissey, and brother, Thomas Murphy.
Visitation will be at Coffey Funeral Home on Sunday May 1st from 3pm to 8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Transfiguration Church on Monday at 10:30 with burial to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
