Maureen Barbelet, a lifelong resident of Tarrytown, died August 17, 2025 at the age of 80. Born in Mount Vernon on November 1, 1944, she was the eldest of 5 children of Raymond and Eleanor (Frawley) McGowan.
Maureen was in the first Kindergarten class at Transfiguration School and her class was the first to graduate from 8th grade. It was in Transfiguration School that she met her future husband, Gerald Barbelet. Maureen was a graduate of Our Lady of Victory Academy and was in the first class to graduate from the Dobbs Ferry campus. She then went on to graduate from St. Joseph’s College in Connecticut with a degree in Teaching and Early Childhood Education.
On November 16, 1966, Maureen married Gerald Barbelet in Transfiguration Church. She taught for 2 years at Immaculate Conception School in Irvington but then became a stay-at-home mom to her 3 sons. While raising her sons, Maureen became active in the PTA and the Tarrytown School District. She was also a Youth Employment Facilitator for the Villages. At the same time, Maureen stayed very active with Transfiguration Parish as a CCD teacher and serving on the parish Council.
In 1987, Maureen accepted a position as Executive Director of the Elizabeth Mascia Child Care Center. This became her passion and for 20 years, she dedicated herself to extraordinary care and education of infants and children. She oversaw the transition to the center’s current location and the opening of an infant location in Sleepy Hollow.
In her retirement, Maureen worked part-time for Bella’s Boutique and served as a consultant for the Child Care Council of Westchester. She had also been a Trustee and President of the Board of Education of the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns and served on the board of the Tarrytown Community Opportunity Center and the Westcop County Board.
Maureen and Jerry enjoyed travelling especially to the family house on Lake Dunmore in Vermont and trips to Aruba.
Maureen is survived by her sons Kevin (Lauren), John (Leigh) and Dennis (Alyssa). She was also the wonderful and adored grandmother of Alexandra, Thea, Stephen, Emma, Aubrey and William. She was also the loving sister of Raymond (Diane), Theresa Hill, Stephen (Nicole) and Michael (Catherine). Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Her husband, Jerry died in 2016 and she was also predeceased by her brother-in-law JP Hill.
Visitation will be at Coffey Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4PM to 8PM. Her Funeral Mass will be on Thursday at Transfiguration Church at 10:30 followed by interment in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
