Marie (Monteiro) Nicol Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Marie Nicol on the 7th of February, 2025. Marie left this world peacefully at Phelps Memorial Hospital surrounded by her devoted children. A cherished resident of Sleepy Hollow, Marie leaves behind a legacy of grace, love, kindness and extraordinary generosity.
Born on the 10th of October, 1936 to Antonio and Pelegrina (Mary) Monteiro in Ossining, New York, Marie attended Ossining Public Schools and graduated from Ossining High School in 1954. She remained active in the planning of many reunions and social events with her classmates. Marie loved her Ossining Indians!
Marie worked at Mallory Batteries after graduating and then dedicated herself to raising a family. She worked for the First National Bank of North Tarrytown (now Tompkins) for 35 years. Marie was a valued employee who always adroitly tended to her customers and every child in the community knew where to go to get a free lollipop.
After retiring, Marie was an active member of the Sleepy Hollow Senior Citizens and served as their treasurer. She enjoyed time with her friends at BINGO, word puzzles, reading on her back deck in the sunshine, an occasional glass of Pinot Grigio at JP Doyle’s, rooting for the NY Giants and Penn State football, but most of all holding all of her babies! Marie remained quite stylish and a social force until the end. She was a cherished local figure who everyone knew and loved.
While Marie was accomplished in many things throughout her life, her joy came from her family. Marie is survived by her three children, John D. Nicol II, Jayne Arduino (and Joe), and Janine Nicol (and Doug McLellan); five grandchildren, Tim Arduino (and Leah), John D. Nicol III, Emily Schnog (and Sam), Andrew Nicol and Nick Arduino (and Jenny Bucci); three great grandchildren, Peyton Schnog, Joey Arduino and Carter Schnog; her sister Marian Duclos, brother Tony Monteiro (and Mary), sister Virginia (Ginny) Maret (and Dean), brother-in-law Hugh Nicol (and Sally); and multiple nieces and nephews – all of whom remain eternally grateful for Marie’s unyielding dedication and boundless love.
Marie’s generosity and feisty, larger than life spirit will forever be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. When you mention her name people just smile. Marie was a woman who truly lived her life with open arms and an open heart, leaving a legacy of kindness and joy that will endure through the lives she touched. She will be deeply missed, but her light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who loved her. Rest in peace Marie.
