Joseph P. Jelenek, a former resident Westchester County and 20-year resident of Heuvelton, NY died peacefully at home at the age of 98. Born in North Tarrytown on June 16, 1925 he was the son of Joseph P. and Matilda (Prokop) Jelenek. He served honorably in the United States Navy during World War II.
Joseph earned his BA in Architecture from Catholic University and went on to earn a Master’s at NYU. The bulk of his career was teaching architecture, but in the summers, he worked in various positions such as at General Motors and with the Village of Tarrytown.
Joseph married Mary Gasparovic on June 24, 1950 and they had been married for 63 years when she predeceased him in 2013. They raised a large family together and Joe had been a coach for his sons in baseball and football.
Surviving are his 9 children: Marianne (John)Weldon Heuvelton, NY, Joseph (Terry)Jelenek Newark, DE, Tom (Natalie)Jelenek New Jersey, Anthony (Joanne)Jelenek Irvington, NY, John (Kim)Jelenek Sleepy Hollow, NY, Matt (Lisa) Jelenek, Wappingers Falls, NY, Frank (Jean)Jelenek Costa Mesa, CA, Jim Jelenek Verplanck, NY and Paul (Patricia) Jelenek, Virginia as well as 20 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. In addition to his wife Mary, he was predeceased by his sisters Elsie, Ann and Joan.
Visitation will be at Coffey Funeral Home on Thursday from 3PM to 7PM. His Funeral Mass will be on Friday at St. Teresa of Avila Church at 10:00 followed by interment with Military Honors at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
