John Ragusa Obituary
John Joseph Ragusa, Sr. June 5, 1932 - September 3, 2025
Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, John Joseph Ragusa, Sr., 93, of Tarrytown, NY, passed away peacefully at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, NY, on September 3, 2025, after a brief illness. John was born in North Tarrytown, NY (now Sleepy Hollow) on June 5, 1932, to Salvatore and Salvatrice (nee Corallo) Ragusa, originally from Ragusa, Sicily.
John graduated from North Tarrytown High School in 1951 and joined the United States Navy in 1952, where he served on a supply ship during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1956 at the rank of Ship’s Cook 2nd Class Petty Officer, where he also served as an anti-aircraft gunner. John served his community as a volunteer firefighter from the age of 18, first with Union Hose in North Tarrytown (Sleepy Hollow) and then with Phoenix Hose in Tarrytown, NY, where he had been a member for the past 46 years and had held the position of President. He was also a third- and fourth-Degree member of the Knights of Columbus of former Council 318 in Tarrytown, NY. John served his church as a member of the Holy Name Society of Immaculate Conception in Sleepy Hollow, where he had been an usher and bazaar co-chairman along with his beloved friend, Armando “Chick” Galella.
John was a first-rate butcher for most of his professional career and owned his own butcher store on Main Street in Tarrytown from 1968-1975 called Riverview Meat Market. Most importantly, John was a loving family man, devout Catholic, and dedicated community servant. He enjoyed gardening, decorating his house for the holidays, spending time with his family, playing cards with his buddies at the firehouse, and most especially watching his beloved NY Yankees and NY football Giants.
John met the love of his life, his wife Marian Ragusa (nee Cammarano), through a friend of his from the Navy who lived in her building, and they married on January 17, 1959. He is survived by his wife Marian and their four children: his three loving and devoted sons John, Jr. (Debra), Robert, Donald (Deborah), and his loving and devoted daughter, whom he cherished, Mary Ann (Majid). John had eight amazing grandchildren that he adored: Erica (Allen), Gina (Nick), David (Jennifer), Ryan (Stephanie), Daniel (Anna), Carlie, Maggie (Blake), and Farah, and nine great-grandchildren with one on the way. John is also survived by his sister Mary and brother Joe (Judy), and countless nieces and nephews who adored him. John’s smile, infectious laugh and loving embrace will be dearly missed by his beloved family and friends.
John’s wake will be held at Coffey Funeral Home, 91 North Broadway, Tarrytown, NY on Sunday, September 7, 2025, from 3:00PM-7:00PM. John’s funeral will be held at the Church of the Transfiguration 268 South Broadway, Tarrytown, NY on Monday, September 8, 2025, at 10:30AM followed by interment at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow, NY.
