It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Dad, John Michael Doherty, who died on Wednesday, May 22nd at the age of 78, after a brief battle with leukemia. John was born in Ballyshannon, County Donegal, and emigrated to New York in Middle School.
He spent the rest of his teen years growing up in the Rockaways, attending St. Francis deSales School in Belle Harbor and Bishop Loughlin HS in Brooklyn. He then pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Social Studies at St. Francis College. John spent his first few work years as a trader on Wall Street, briefly aspired to become a teacher, but then settled into a career in Federal Law Enforcement for the U. S. Government, serving in New York, Texas, California, and Hawaii.
John is predeceased by his brother, Neil, his sisters, Philomena and Maura, and his parents, Neil and Mollie (Melanophy) Doherty. John is survived by his loving children and grandchildren: Son Kevin Doherty and his wife, Christina; daughter Christie Crawford, and her husband, Kiowa; and grandchildren Kelsey Crawford, Ryan Doherty and Christian Doherty. John is also survived by his sister, Catherine, her husband, Ron, and their children, Niall and Rowan.
John’s memory will be carried, as well, by Carol Mackey (Doherty) and Christine Doherty. Private funeral services are planned for a later date.
