Joan Dobson Obituary

“Jacy” Joan Catherine Dobson

November 19, 1930 – March 20, 2018

Jacy Dobson, 87, a devoted community longtime resident (60 years) of Tarrytown, NY and loving wife of Chauncey Dobson, M.D. (66 years), died peacefully on Tuesday, March 20, surrounded by her four daughters, Stephanie, Cynthia, Valerie and Deirdre at Westchester Medical Center.  She had a tear in her thoracic aorta that was inoperable.

Jacy was born in Brooklyn, NY, on November 19, 1930, the eldest daughter of Edward and Kay Friedemann and is predeceased by her brother, Eddie.

She graduated from Berkeley in California with a Registered Nursing degree and met Chauncey who was studying medicine at the University of Southern California.  She convinced him to come live up in the Northeast where there were four seasons and winter was her favorite.

Jacy was a petite woman but was large.  She was the incredibly strong matriarch of the entire family and could regale the large crowd at any holiday meal with her many wonderful stories.  And she had a parcel of stories about each and every one.  She was gregarious, had a beautiful laugh and always was positive and extremely wise about all life experiences and great with non critical advice.  She was fashionable and wore a beautiful green shamrock scarf when she last was with my Dad two days before she left us.

Jacy was a full time mother raising seven children and is most proud that all of them are still married.  She kept the family together like sticky glue.  We went on many ski vacations and enjoyed a condo at Stratton for many years.

Jacy was most proud of her volunteering in the community and gave over 20 years of her expertise to the Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance Corp.  She was President of the Corp for 2 years (1986 - 1988) and was Chairman of the Board of Directors for 19 years (1993 - 2012).  If you stopped in the family home, many times you could hear her beeper sounding off and she was on her way to help someone.  She was also an excellent bowler and was in a league for many years rising up to the top and even bowling 300 games.  As children, we ran around the bowling alley as our second home.  She also played tennis and was a devoted follower of all the professional tournaments.  She knew more about the players than even the commentators and we always felt she should have been in the booth with them.  We vied to sit next to her at the matches because she could give you tidbits on all of the action, a running dialog, much better than the ear phones you could use.

On any given Sunday, you could go to the family home where they have lived for 49 years and find Jacy doing the New York Times crossword puzzle after she had extensively read the paper and drank her coffee.  Her handwriting was beautiful and had as much personality as she did.  She would have the TV on in the background and always a mystery book she was in the middle of reading.  She had a favorite chair where she would read and rock and listen to your current events and dig up a story to match whatever was going on in your life.

Jacy was a life long member of Transfiguration Church.  She was also in Rotary International.

She is survived by her husband, Chauncey, and her six children, Stephanie Trolle of Danbury, CT; Cynthia Tefft of Hamilton, Mass; Paul Dobson of River Vale, NJ; Valerie Frost of Norwalk, CT; Gary Dobson of Spring Lake, NC and Deirdre Carsto of Tarrytown and 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.  She is predeceased by one daughter Marcy Dobson and two granddaughters, Jocelyn and Alyssa.

A memorial service will be held at Coffey Funeral Home, Tarrytown, Saturday, March 31, 1-4 p.m.  Donations may be given to the Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance Corp.
