J. Scott Toth Obituary
It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of John Scott Toth. Whether you
knew him as J. Scott, John, Scott, Big Scott, or his absolute favorite name “Biggie,” he was larger than
life!
Born to Gustav and Olga Superak Toth on June 10, 1952, he was a proud lifelong “Tarrytowner,”
operating his family’s beloved Set Back Inn throughout. Scott graduated from Sleepy Hollow High
School, class of 1970. The football team was his passion and he often recalled the on-field (and off-field)
rivalries with Ossining High School.
Scott’s 36-year career with the Village of Tarrytown began in the Water Department, moving to the
Highway Department, finally retiring as Assistant General Foreman. He was a proud member of the
Washington Engine Co. II, now Tower Ladder 78, for over 50 years. Building and designing “Big Blue”
with the truck committee was a creative project he proudly endeavored. He was Chief of the Fire
Department in 1985 and again in 1997. He served as President of his company and was a past member
of the Board of Fire Wardens.
Scott married Jody Palis, a Marymount girl from New Jersey in 1976. Together, they raised three
children; Scott (Bridget), Matthew (Jamie), and Samantha (John). Biggie was the proud Grandpa to
Declan, Tierney, Fiona, JJ, Jack, Kelly, and Quinn. He loved them more than life itself and they adored
him!
Scott was an avid outdoorsman and passionate sports enthusiast. There are many stories of exploits
while fishing (the one that got away and the one that didn’t) and hunting with friends. The camaraderie
was more important than the actual result of the day. It wasn’t unusual to see a buck hanging from a
tree in the Toth backyard during hunting season. Ironically, even though he caught many a fish, he
wouldn’t eat one! Planning the Venison dinner with family and friends was a task he looked forward to
every year.
His greatest joy was that his children inherited his love of sports and he encouraged their passion. He
knew the directions and willingly drove to every hockey rink, lacrosse field and softball field in the tri-
state area.
Scott’s love for his family was big! He is survived by Jody, his children and grandchildren, his brother
Jeffrey (Joanne), and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Coffey Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4PM to 8PM. His Funeral Mass will be Wednesday at Transfiguration Church at 10:30.
