Edward Stephen Murphy, Jr. Obituary
Edward Stephen Murphy, Jr. May 22, 1957 - September 10,2022 Stephen was born in New Bern, North Carolina, to Major Edward Stephen Murphy, Sr. USMC, and Mrs. Elizabeth Ann (Betsy) Murphy (Miller) of North Tarrytown and Tarrytown, New York. Stephen and his family moved frequently to Marine and Naval Air bases around the United States as his father's duties required, which culminated in a tour of duty in Iwakuni, Japan, in 1972. Stephen enjoyed living in Japan, although he was seriously injured there, through no fault of his own, in a road accident that left him in a coma for a week. He recovered, and returned to the U.S. with his parents, to Yuma, Arizona, where he attended Arizona Western College. Stephen completed his Bachelor’s degree at the University of Arizona, Tucson, and was accepted by the Officer Candidate School of the U.S. Navy. On graduation, Stephen received his commission as Ensign from his father, Col. E.S. Murphy, Sr., USMC-ret., with Mrs. Murphy observing; a proud moment for them all. Stephen served his active duty aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise and hosted his father on a homeward bound cruise aboard the Enterprise from Hawaii to California. Stephen also welcomed other family members to tour the ship at dock. After his active-duty Stephen continued to be engaged in arranging training for Reserve personnel and records-keeping in the Navy Reserve. He attended the University of San Diego, achieved his Paralegal Certificate, and was hired by a large Nevada law firm. Stephen later worked as an independent paralegal in the Las Vegas area. Stephen moved back to Yuma in late 2010, about a month before his mother's unexpected death. His father relied heavily on Stephen's strength and support during that time and made Stephen his personal secretary/business manager. Stephen fulfilled these duties so well that his father was able to travel again and enjoy a social life. Stephen was at hand to care for his father in his retirement community in Las Vegas when his father passed away. Stephen passed away at Yuma Regional Medical Center of pancreatic cancer. He was interred with his parents at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Sleepy Hollow, New York on December 6, 2022 with Rev. Dany Abi-Akar officiating. Stephen is survived by several family members and by his friends. Stephen loved his parents best and longest of anyone in his life, and it should give comfort to those who loved him that he will be buried with them. Stephen also loved the family dogs, Brutus, Bill Bailey and Duke, and his boyhood pet, Quinn, the chameleon. Stephen did not want a memorial service, but a Mass Intention for the repose of his soul has been arranged for January, 2023, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, in Scottsdale, Arizona.
