Deochan Sarran Obituary
Deochan Sarran was born, on July 13,1947 in Calcutta Settlement #2, Trinidad to Babooni (Nanny) and Ramsarran (Nanna) Kanhai. He was the 5th child of 10 children, His parents lived in Marabella, Trinidad where Deo’s 4 older siblings were born. Ramdai (Roni), Dolsie, Shirley and Frank. Nanny and Nanna bought their land and built their house and Deo, Selwyn (Lal), Ramlal (Ram), and Jaglal (Zoge) were born. During this time their family planted rice, tobacco, and sugarcane. He had very humble beginnings. He lived in a mud house with his parents and 9 siblings. Deo attended Four Roads Presbyterian School and then Upper Carapichaima School. He spent his childhood making mischief with his brothers. He never graduated high school but from 12 years old to 16 years old he took various courses like short hand typing and was also a goldsmith apprentice. He was 16 years old when his Uncle Hitlal got him and his Uncle Style a job at Caroni Limited as a bookkeeper. He would ride his bike to work and get into trouble for making stops at his girlfriends houses. He loved working so much that his mom was protecting him because she thought his uncle Styles was making him do his job too. While working at Caroni Limited he enjoyed his time and was a ladies man in his village. He bought a Hilman Hunter car, PM7677, the 1st car in his village!! He took on responsibilities for his family at a young age …he stopped his mom from working in the cane field around 1968 because he was able to support her. He arranged for his youngest brother to work as a mechanic’s apprentice. He completed an IBM book-keeper course. Always, wheeling and dealing ...his boss at Caroni was illiterate, and Deo used this as an opportunity for him to sign a job recommendation which resulted in a US Green Card to work for IBM in New York 42nd street and 3rd Ave.
Deo immigrated to the United States June 13, 1971 when he was 24 years old. He transformed into a mature man who was still full of charisma and boyish fun but he was focused on fulfilling the American Dream. At first, he lived in the YMCA, worked at IBM during the day and even a laundromat at night to help support his family back in Trinidad. When his future wife Sita immigrated they moved into an apartment on 47th street in NYC and then to an apartment on Moshoulou Parkway in the Bronx. During this time he worked during the days at IBM he also drove a taxi. Deo travelled back and forth to Trinidad to visit his parents and siblings.
In 1975 he purchased his own taxi medallion and got married on March 18, 1975 to Sita!! They purchased their 1st liquor store in 1977 in Allerton Ave in the Bronx. In 1978 Deo and Sita purchased their 1st house on Pennsylvania Ave in Mount Vernon, NY. Deo was the 1st to own a business and a home in the US and he used his resources to help his nieces, nephews, brothers, sisters and extended family come to the U.S. He made a way for everyone he loved to begin their American Dream. Their 1st child, Lisa Ann Marie, was born in October 1978. In 1979 to 1984 they owned a clothing store on Central Ave in Yonkers in addition to the liquor store and driving the taxi. During this time, their 2nd child, Melissa Marie was born in December 1980. Also in 1980, he sold his liquor store in Allerton Ave. In 1982 he opened his second liquor store at Main Street Yonkers and in 1985 he sold his taxi medallion and never drove a taxi again. His father passed away in Trinidad in 1984. Deo loved his nieces and nephews and siblings deeply. Around this time his nephews Ashly and Nigel came to live with him when their mom passed away. He began attending the Church of God in New Rochelle and became a Christian in the 1980s and was baptized in the Jordan River in 1987 by his lifelong Pastor, Dr. Raphael Gibbs. In 1996 he opened his 3rd liquor store, Cut Price Liquors also in Main Street, Yonkers which he had for 20 years. His mom, Nanny, was a huge part of his life during these years.
Deo loved to hunt, fish and take road trips to Washington DC and Niagara Falls. He spent most Sundays at home cooking and entertaining family at his home. In 1989 their 3rd child Michael Deochan was born and Deo and Sita sold their 1st home in Mt. Vernon and purchased their current house at 430 Bellwood Ave. in Tarrytown. In 1990, their 4th and youngest child Mark Anthony was born. Shortly after he opened his 4th liquor store, Mik-Mak discount liquors in 1990 and sold it in 1998 to purchase his current building in Gun Hill Road in the Bronx. Deo and Sita had their hands full with 4 kids and their American Dream. But he still continued to spend Sundays at church and at home. He spent countless hours perfecting his prized lawn, planting his garden, cutting down trees where he could. He loved a home DIY project, he was his own handyman and his favorite store was Home Depot. He took family trips to Disney World, attended soccer games, swim practices, and steel pan lessons. His daughter Lisa married Teeindra in 2003 and Deo became a grandpa in 2007 when his grandson, Luke was born. Tee and Lisa welcomed their daughters Eva in 2011 and Lily in 2013. His daughter, Melissa married Yovendra in 2010 and they welcomed their daughters, Kyra in 2012 and Arya in 2014. Deo sold his building he had purchased in 2005 in Tarrytown in 2015 to purchase his 4th liquor store M&M liquor, M&M Beer as well as the building. In 2016 sold his Main street Yonkers liquor store business and purchased his 5th and current liquor store in Warburton Avenue. Deo’s mother, Nanny, died in 2016 when she was 101 years old. His son Mark married Kamielia in 2019. Deo became a grandpa for the 6th time when Michael and Yamily welcomed Aliyah Sita in 2020. Deo never stopped travelling to Trinidad. Sometimes he would make several trips a year. But he also travelled with his grandkids to Disney World, Italy, Spain, Hawaii, Paris and most recently to India. He loved going to restaurants with his sons and sons-in-law, never wanting to be left out on a boys' night out or a trip. Deo spent his golden years semi-retired as his sons took over his businesses, but he still enjoyed patrolling his properties every day, circling around to his kids homes to visit his grandkids and check on everyone.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years Sita, their 4 children, Lisa, Melissa, Michael and Mark, his sons- in- laws Teeindra and Yovendra, his daughters-in-law Kamielia and Yamily, his 6 grandchildren, Luke, Eva, Kyra, Lily, Arya and Aliyah, his younger brother Lal and his older sisters Dolsie and Shirley.
He made an impact in all the lives God put in his path. He loved deeply and he was loved deeply.
We will miss him forever.
