Berkeley D. Rice Obituary

Berkeley Rice

January 29, 1937 - May 4, 2024

Berkeley D. Rice passed away at the age of 87 on May 4th, 2024, after suffering for years from Parkinson’s and brain cancer. He was a treasured father, husband, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Berkeley was born on January 29, 1937 in Hyannis, MA, where he spent his formative years together with his older brother, Jack. He went on to attend Amherst and Columbia, spending his summers playing the piano in music tents on Cape Cod to help pay for his tuition. He became a freelance journalist, an editor at Psychology Today and Medical Economics, and a prolific writer of four non-fiction books and countless articles. Throughout his career, he was known for his hard work, dedication, and passion for helping others.

When the boys were very little, Berkeley was asked by his best friend David to become an editor at Psychology Today. That involved a move to Southern California. It was two years of bliss, heaven on earth. A 180-degree view of the Pacific Ocean, which would lead them back to the East to their Sleepy Hollow home, with its 180-degree view of the Hudson.

But more than anything, Berkeley was a devoted father. He loved spending time with his sons, who became equally dedicated to nature, kayaking, biking, sailing, cross-country skiing, and music. He was always there to offer guidance, support, and encouragement, no matter what challenges they faced.

Berkeley was best known for his tremendous organizing of the biannual book sales for the Warner Library, the proceeds of which paid for concerts and lectures that The Friends of Warner Library offered.

Berkeley is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Annegret. Part of his anguish in later years when he got ill was the fact that he was no longer visited by his sons, Andrew and Marcus, who predeceased him. One of his joys was swimming daily in the Hudson River. Even last year, the lifeguards made it possible for him to get in and out of the water he loved. He was counting on another wonderful summer. It never was to be.

At this time, there is no funeral service planned. A memorial service will be held for family and close friends at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Annegret, who was very devoted to Berkeley, wishes that donations be made to:
