William Marmo of Tarrytown died December 13, 2019 at the age of 85. Born in Acerenza, Italy on August 9, 1934, he was the son of J. Anthony and Irma Buonanno Marmo. He came to the United States as a young man and brought with him the trade he learned as a boy in Italy. He was a barber and eventually bought a barber shop on Cortlandt Street in North Tarrytown. He was affectionately known as ‘Red’ the Barber. The business began to change in the early 1970’s and he decided to close the shop. He went to work for General Motors where he worked until his retirement
Bill was also an accomplished musician. While he played the violin for the Yonkers Symphony, he also played the accordion, organ, piano and just about every stringed instrument.
Bill was a parishioner of Transfiguration Church where he also served as an usher. He was a charter member of the North Tarrytown Ambulance Corps and was a member of Local 664 of the U.A.W. He was president of I.T.A.L.O. Bill was also very involved in the early days of soccer in this country. He was a 35 year member of the Eastern District Soccer League and was inducted into its Hall of Fame.
Bill is survived by his loving wife Susan (Hughes), his loving children Anthony J. Marmo, Diana (Ron) Spence and Tina Caruso. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren Michael, Liam Thomas, Danny, Hailey and Kaitlyn; his sisters Angie Farrell and Delia Ackerman; Shirley Marmo, the mother of his children as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother Patsy.
Visitation will be at Coffey Funeral Home on Monday from 2-4 & 7-9PM. His Funeral Mass will be Tuesday at 10:30 at Transfiguration Church followed by entombment in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
