Sophie Janos, a life-long resident of Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown died July 11, 2019 at the age of 100 at Phelps Hospital surrounded by her children. She was born May 18, 1919 on Gesner Place in Sleepy Hollow (formerly North Tarrytown) and just recently celebrated her milestone birthday with family and friends. Sophie was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Margaret McGinniss Nikitopoulos. On January 13, 1946, she married Frank P. Janos in the Church of the Transfiguration in Tarrytown where she was a life-long parishioner. She was also a member of the Tarrytown and Transfiguration Seniors and until the age of 90, she was a 20-year volunteer at Phelps Hospital. During World War II, she worked at Eastern Aircraft Division of General Motors in North Tarrytown and once her children were grown, Sophie was employed by the Linde Division of Union Carbide Corporation in Eastview retiring in 1982.
She is survived by her children Marlene Winky Janos (Joe O’Donnell) of Norcross, Georgia; Frances Fronz Janos of Lords Valley, Pennsylvania; James F. Janos (Patricia) of Wappingers Falls, New York; and Frank P. Janos, Jr. (Irina Zaretsky) of Briarcliff Manor, New York. She is also survived by her grandchildren Gregory, Michael, Joseph, Matthew, Maxine, Georgina, Frank and Henry; as well as her great grandchildren Jayden, Madison, Gianna, Chase and Marin. She is survived by her sister Filomena Simons of Pleasant Valley, New York. She is predeceased by her husband Frank and siblings Argyro, James, Robert, Irene, Theodore, Basil, Mary, Frank and John.
Sophie was blessed to have Marcela, Slavka and Marta, her care giving angles who provided her with wonderful, loving care.
Sophie will be fondly remembered by all who knew her as a kind and caring person always putting the needs of her family and others ahead of her own. She had many life-long friends who knew they could always rely on her in times of need. To her children, she was the source of inspiration and a loving mother with a great sense of humor. Her deep faith and trust in God guided her through some trying times early in life especially with the loss of her parents and brother James, and her beloved husband Frank in 1990.
Visitation will be at Coffey Funeral Home on Monday July 15, 2019 from 4 to 8 PM. Her Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday July 16, 2019 at the Church of the Transfiguration at 10:30 AM with interment to follow in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
