Margarita Cortes most recently of Croton, died June 23, 2018 at the age of 99. Born in Cuba on October 22, 1918, she was the daughter of Bartolome and Estella Nunez Cortes. She came to the United States in 1962. She was quite a remarkable woman. While she was attending school to earn both a Master’s Degree and a Law Degree, she worked as a pattern maker and designer. She became a Social Worker and in 1972, she moved to California to be near her son. She began a career with the County of Santa Clara as a Social Worker and she also taught mentally retarded children for many years. Margarita had a very deep faith and was very active in her church in California. She was also an avid stamp and coin collector. In her retirement, she moved back to New York to be near family.
Margarita is survived by her loving son Daniel Meruelo of Briarcliff Manor, 5 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son Otto Meruelo and 2 sisters.
Visitation will be at Coffey Funeral Home on Wednesday from 6 to 8 PM and again on Thursday from 9 to 10:30 AM. Her Funeral Mass will be at Immaculate Conception Church Sleepy Hollow immediately following at 11:00.
