Joseph Slywka, a longtime resident of Tarrytown, passed away in his home on March 24, 2019, after suffering from Parkinson’s Disease for many years. He served as a member of the Tarrytown Board of Education from 1985 to 1988 and co-founded the town’s chapter of the youth soccer league, A.Y.S.O.. He was an enthusiastic member of the Philipse Manor Boat Club and the Ukrainian Institute of America. Born on August 31, 1939 in Ukraine, he immigrated to New York City in 1949. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School in 1957 and received a B.S. in 1961 and a M.S. in 1963 from Fordham University. He taught biology at Bronx Community College of CUNY for four years, a position for which he received tenure. He earned a Ph.D. in the Medical Sciences Program from New York University and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in 1980. He enjoyed a long career as a clinical researcher in the pharmaceutical industry. He is survived by his wife Oksana, sons Andrey and Nikolai, daughter-in-law Viktoria, and grandchildren Olivia and Martin.
