Joaquim Pastilha, a longtime Sleepy Hollow resident died peacefully at home on July 5, 2019. He was 89. Born in Portugal on May 25, 1930, he was the son of Manuel F. and Maria Claudina Pastilha.
He served in Portuguese Army in Mozambique and he remained there because he found work there. That is when he met his future wife Maria Adelina Pereira. They married there and their two children Luisa and Antonio were born there. When the children were very young, Joaquim and his family came to America and settled in North Tarrytown which is where he spent the rest of his life.
Joaquim was a longtime employee of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and continued working there in the summers long after he retired. He was a member of the Portuguese American Cultural Center of the Tarrytowns.
Joaquim is survived by his loving wife Maria Adelina and his loving children Luisa and Antonio. He is also survived by his beloved granddaughter Michelle (John) Sampaio and his adored great granddaughter Michaela Sampaio. Also surviving are his siblings Maria Antunes, Emidio and Mario Pastilha and Elisa Meireles. He was predeceased by his beloved grandson C.J. Nobrega, his brother Jose and his sister Carminda Vicente.
Visitation will be at Coffey Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4PM to 8PM. His Funeral Mass will be on Wednesday at 10:00 at St. Teresa of Avila Church with interment to follow in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
