Dorothy M. (Boettner) Bushel

Dorothy Bushel formerly of Tarrytown died October 9, 2018 at the age of 97. Born in New Rochelle, NY on January 15, 1921, she was the daughter of Edward and Rose Stark Boettner. Dorothy attended New Rochelle Schools was a graduate of New Rochelle High School, Class of 1937.

On May 11, 1941, Dorothy married Gerard R. Bushel, Sr. and the couple settled in Tarrytown where Gerard was a popular Motorcycle Police Officer on the Tarrytown Police Force for many years. They raised their children Gerard, Jr and Edward who are twins and William in Tarrytown. Later they moved to Dobbs Ferry for a number of years. Dorothy then went to Palm Springs, FL and came back to Westchester in recent years, settling in Shrub Oak.

She had been a communicant of The Church of the Transfiguration. She lived an interesting life and was very much a part of a family of twins. She not only raised identical twins, but was a twin herself and she had two sets of twins who were her first cousins (her mother and both of her sisters gave birth to twins, all girls and all fraternal). Of further interest, the three Stark sisters were all born in the month of April; and her mother’s older sister, Emma, gave birth to her twins exactly a year to the day after her sister Rose gave birth to her twins.

Dorothy is survived by her sons, Gerard, Jr. (Joan) of Sleepy Hollow and twin Edward, Sr. (Bernie) of Littleton, CO. Also surviving are her 5 grandchildren, Diane Burchell (Peter) of Mahopac; Gerard F. Bushel of Sleepy Hollow; Laurie Melagrano (Frank) of Yorktown Heights; Kerry Fedro (Tom) of Irvine, CA and Edward Bushel, Jr. (Michelle) of Centennial, CO. as well as 11 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Dorothy’s husband Gerard died in December 1976 and her son William died in 2013. She was also predeceased by her parents and her twin sister Evelyn and husband Joseph and her older sister Rose and husband Harold.

Visitation will be at Coffey Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4PM to 8PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday at The Church of the Transfiguration at 10:30 AM with interment to follow in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
