Jennaro Anthony “Jerry” Vallo died peacefully on March 23, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones. He was 86 years old.
Jerry was born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan to Joseph and Ida Vallo. He was pre-deceased by his beloved first wife, Muriel Barkin. He was also pre-deceased by his four brothers, Bozie, Victor, James, and Joseph, and four sisters, Carmela, Angelina, Jeanette, and Rose; and by his daughter, Carol and his granddaughter, Olivia.
Jerry was also pre-deceased by his much-adored wife, Susan Hogan Vallo, whom he doted on for 53 years.
Jerry is survived by his four children, Donna (Kermit Theall), Jerry, Ida (Daniel Morris), and Linda (Michael Queenan); his grandchildren, Jennifer, Jaclyn, Shauna, Destin, Paige, Jillian, Ben, Riley, Finnegan, Lilah, Nolan, and Luke; his great-grandchildren, Peter, Amelia, Bentley, Eleanor, Emerson, James, and Ada, and many beloved nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Vallo Shibetti.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he showed real promise as a boxer—a path he abandoned because his cherished mother couldn’t bear to see him get hit. And he was so proud to serve on the Croton-on-Hudson Police Department for more than 20 years, retiring as sergeant. He loved occasionally pulling his family members over on Route 9.
Jerry wore his emotions on his sleeve and in his ever-present cherub smile, and his love was as powerful as his handshake.
He loved the New York Yankees, anything chocolate, old movies, and his country.
He loved his family most of all, ever-present in our lives, whether it was cheering us on from the stands at our games or asleep on the chair in the den.
Whenever his family was together we’d spot him off to the side, with a big smile on his face and tears welling in his eyes when he said, almost to himself, “My family is here. That’s very nice.”
His whistle could be heard in the furthest corners of Douglas Park, the most familiar notes of our lives, calling us home for dinner.
Every Sunday morning we’d wake to the house filled with the amazing smell of his sauce and meatballs and find a box of pastries from Pastry Chef on the counter. Countless fresh rolls dipped in the sauce as it simmered on the stove because we just couldn’t wait, him looking on with pride and joy.
He was never more than a phone call away, no matter what, no questions asked. If he was needed at our house at 6:30, there was no doubt he’d be sitting in the driveway at 6:00, in case we needed him sooner.
He was a beloved father, brother, friend, uncle, and Pops. He taught us how a man should treat his wife during a lifetime of devotion to our mom.
He was warm and genuine and funny and silly. He was tender-hearted and kind, and also an absolute rock of strength, the foundation of our family. He was “strong like bull.”
He knew how to make people feel loved. He made us feel loved.
There is no measuring how much he was loved back, or how much he’ll be missed.
