Francis Reilly Obituary

Francis J. Reilly of Tarrytown, NY passed on December 22, 2023 at the age of 81. Born in Queens, NY, on December 18, 1942, he was the son of Francis and Katherine Elizabeth (Grimes) Reilly. Francis was raised in Woodhaven, Queens and the family later moved to Garden City, Long Island. While attending Garden City High School, he enjoyed working stagecraft for plays as a way to bring his passion for theater, TV and film to life. He then earned his BA from Pace University and continued his education, earning an MA in Communications from NYU.

He began his career as a Wall Street financial editor, worked as a real estate assessor and then moved on to have a long and fulfilling career as a secondary education teacher with the NYC Public Schools, finally in District 10. Upon retirement, Francis actualized his lifelong dream of diving into the nuances of acting at Stella Adler Studio, which led to two decades as a background actor where he found great joy and endless adventure pursuing his passion in various television shows and movies across 11 counties. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, listening to and learning to play music, photography and travel.

Francis was known for his ability to infuse wonder and awe into the mundane, as if every day and every movement was the plot of a movie. His smile was bright and light and he always enjoyed bringing laughter to others, no matter what level of silliness was required. His kindness, generosity and sense of humor go unmatched.

On July 8, 1978, he married Mary-Lou Clare at Fordham University. The couple eventually settled in Pennybridge, Tarrytown and then Irvington-on-Hudson where they raised their children. Francis is survived by his loving family, including his wife Mary-Lou, his son Christopher and his daughter Jennifer.
