Eve (Hlavicka) Gross of Sleepy Hollow passed away peacefully on March 10, 2010 after a long illness with Alzheimer’s.

Eve was born in Peekskill, NY on November 18, 1917 to John and Hedwig (Holly) Hlavicka. Shortly after, her family moved to North Tarrytown where she grew up. She is a graduate of the North Tarrytown High School and the White Plains Business School.

Eve was employed by the County Trust Company Bank in Tarrytown where she worked in the Mortgage Department. Before retiring, Eve worked many years for the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns where she handled benefits and insurance claims.

On September 19, 1940 Eve married the love of her life, Fred W. Goss, Jr., (former village Fire Chief and Town Supervisor), in the First Reformed Church of North Tarrytown.

Eve was known for her athletic skills. Prior to World War II she toured the state playing softball with her team, the Foley Farmerettes, where she earned the nickname “Fleet Footed Eve”. She was also and avid bowler, winning many tournaments and trophies.

Family and friends were an important part of her life. Eve always had a smile for them. She was always the first to welcome new neighbors with a homemade cake. Her kindness toward others will always be remembered.

Eve was a member of the Union Church of Pocantico Hills. She was also a life member of the Rescue Hose Ladies Auxiliary and the National Sokol Society.

Eve was predeceased by her husband Fred in July of 2000. She was also predeceased by her brother John and sister Emily (Paul) Byelick. She is survived by her three loving children, Jeanne Gallinger (George) of Putnam Valley, Fred III (Kathleen) of Tarrytown and Richard of Sleepy Hollow. She also leaves behind four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Visitation will be on Friday (today) from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Coffey Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at the Union Church of Pocantico Hills on Saturday at 10:00 with interment to follow in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
