After his honorable discharge from active service he remained in the Navy reserves until 1954.

During the early years of his working life, to make ends meet, he also worked at many secondary jobs while working full time at General Motors. These jobs included driving a school bus far the Hackley School in Tarrytown in the evenings and caddying at Sleepy Hollow Country Club on weekends.

Bill loved his hometown of North Tarrytown and served his local community throughout his life. He was a dedicated volunteer fireman and an active member of Rescue Hose Company Number One for more than 50 years. During the 1950’s, he served as the Village Chairman of the North Tarrytown Democratic Party. He loved all sports and coached Little League Baseball in North Tarrytown for many years.
