Sr. Sabyna Schmitz, RSHM

Sr. Sabyna (St. Richard) Schmitz RSHM (86) died Friday, November 20, 2015, at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY.

Born in Brooklyn, NY on July 2, 1929, to Andrew and Sabyna Capper Schmitz, she entered the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in Tarrytown, on September, 8, 1947.

Sr. Sabyna taught at Marymount School in Tarrytown and Marymount School in Umtali, Southern Rhodesia (now Mutari, Zimbabwe) where she also was principal. She was director of St. Joseph’s Center, Tarrytown, NY; pastoral associate at St. Gabriel’s Parish, Saddle River, NJ; a member of the retreat teams at the Oblate Retreat House, Hudson, NH and Cormaria Retreat House, Sag Harbor, NY; and assistant retreat director of Bishop Molloy Retreat House, Jamaica, NY. She worked with the Diocese of Rockville Centre, NY, in the Pastoral Formation Program and the Diocesan Spirituality Center. Following many years of active ministry, she moved to Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, where she was living at the time of her death.

She is survived by her sister-in-law Helen Schmitz of Huntington, NY, her nieces and nephews, and the members of her religious community.

Services at Marymount Convent, 32 Warren Avenue, Tarrytown, NY. Wake Monday, November 23, 3:00-7:30 pm, Vigil Service 7:30 pm. Mass of Christian Burial, Tuesday, November 24, 10:30 am. Burial Mount Calvary Cemetery, White Plains. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her name may be made to Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, 50 Wilson Park Drive, Tarrytown, NY, 10591.
