Edward S. Murphy formerly of North Tarrytown died September 7, 2016 at the age of 88. He was born February 6, 1928 and was the son of Sylvester and Arlene Wilson Murphy.

Ed enlisted in the Marine Corps in April 1945 after graduating from North Tarrytown High School (beat WI!) and was honorably discharged. He attended Georgetown University for one semester and then went to work at the GM Plant in Tarrytown. In November 1947, he reenlisted in the Marine Corps. Based on testing, interviews and service, Ed earned an officer’s commission in 1948. 2nd Lt Murphy was sent to Korea in 1950, making the amphibious landing at Inchon and the advance to the Chosin Reservoir. Ed applied for and was accepted for Flight Training in 1951.
In February 1952, he married Betsy Miller of Tarrytown.
Continuing his career with the Marines, Ed earned his wings and was designated a Naval Aviator upon completion of flight school in 1953. He returned to Korea as a pilot in a jet fighter squadron. After several tours in fighter squadrons, Ed transitioned to helicopters and served 2 shipboard tours.
Ed and Betsy took college classes whenever and wherever they could, Ed earning his Bachelor’s degree in 1969, Betsy in 1974.
Sent to Vietnam in 1969, Ed served as Division Air Officer and flew helicopter missions. After a tour in the states, Ed served as the Commanding Officer of MCAS Iwakuni, Japan, from 1972 to 1975. In 1975, after 29 years in the Marine Corps and rising from private to Colonel, Ed retired to Yuma, AZ.

Ed was the Airport Manager of the Yuma International Airport from 1978 till 1987. During this time he earned his MBA and taught classes for Webster University.
From 1987 until 1990, Ed was the Airport Manager of the Columbia Regional Airport in Columbia, Missouri.

Ed and Betsy returned to Tarrytown in 1990 to care for Betsy’s mother and sister, returning to Yuma AZ in 1991. In their retirement, they enjoyed traveling and cruises, spending time in San Diego and Tarrytown.
Betsy, his wife of 58 years died in 2010.

Ed moved to Las Vegas in 2013, and resided in the Independent Living section of the Las Ventanas Retirement community until his passing in September 2016.
He is survived by his sister Patricia Chambers of North Carolina, son Stephen of Arizona, daughter Katy and granddaughter Marion of Washington, dear friend and travel companion Shirley Biegger and canine buddy Logan of Las Vegas, and Robin Murphy.

Burial services for Ed and Betsy will be at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery on Friday September 8, 2017 at 10:00 am with full military honors.
