Amelia "Amy" (Di Massimo) Carraro

August 5, 1932 ~ August 1, 2015 (age 82) 82 Years Old

CARRARO, Amelia (“Amy”) -- Passed on August 1, 2015.  Resident of Riverdale, New York and longtime resident of Malverne, NY.  Born to Charles and Jean DiMassino, in Harlem, NY on August 5, 1932.  Beloved wife of William (“Red”), Devoted mother of William (and his wife Laura) and the late John (and his wife Jacqui). Loving sister of the late John DiMassino (and his wife the late Nancy). Cherished Grandmother of Nicholas and Thomas, cherished Aunt to John and Therese, and great Aunt to their children Jennifer and Melissa.

“Amy", was also known as other half of the partnership with husband “Red” in the well know record auction dealership, "The Jazz Hunter."   Both Amy and “Red” were true advocates of all things JAZZ.

She was tough but loving, hardworking and honest.  She struggled to pull herself and a family out of the haze of the depression, working toward the American Dream.  Her journey saw her moving from Harlem, to Brooklyn, then Queens, and finally home ownership in Long Island, in a place called Malverne.  Here is where she raised her boys, worked at the local school as a teacher’s aide, and not long after moved into retail in sales and home design at a home furnishings store, The Maple Center.   Amy was also quite proud of the work she did in her younger years, as a trained dental assistant.

But it was the love for Jazz and collecting records that really defined who Amy and Red were.  They hosted jam sessions at the house, went to all the clubs and knew many of the musicians.   This passion turned to a business which included an album auction that found customers throughout North America, buy also in the U.K., Europe, India and Japan.  This modest "mail order" business helped put me through college without any debt upon graduation.

Amy also spent years rescuing homeless dogs and cats…lots of cats, while also feeding every bird in the neighborhood, or so it seemed.

Her days were cut short, but she will be forever remembered. She is joining dad, her son John, so she is in good hands. That said, we already miss her dearly.

Hold all those you care for close.

Bill Carraro
